Why Your Body May Stay on High Alert After a Difficult Experience
Have you ever found yourself jumping at a loud noise, feeling constantly on edge, or struggling to relax even though you know you're safe?
Perhaps you've noticed your heart racing in situations that don't seem dangerous, you find it difficult to switch off at night, or your body feels tense all the time.
Many people ask themselves:
“Why am I still reacting like this?”
The answer is often more compassionate than they expect.
After a difficult or traumatic experience, the body can learn to stay alert in an attempt to protect us. This isn't a sign of weakness or something you're choosing to do, it's an understandable response from a nervous system that has adapted to survive.
In this blog, we'll explore why the body can stay on high alert, what this feels like, and how understanding your nervous system can be the first step towards feeling safer, calmer and more in control.
Your Nervous System is Designed to Protect You
Our brains and bodies are constantly scanning the environment for signs of safety or danger. This happens automatically and often outside of our conscious awareness.
When we perceive a threat, the body's stress response activates. Hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol prepare us to respond by increasing heart rate, sharpening attention and directing energy towards survival.
This response is incredibly adaptive when danger is real. Research into stress physiology describes these responses as essential for survival in the short term, but prolonged activation can affect both physical and psychological wellbeing (McEwen, 1998).
The challenge is that, after a difficult experience, the nervous system may continue behaving as though danger is still nearby, even when it isn't.
What Does “High Alert” Feel Like?
Being on high alert can look different for everyone, but common experiences include:
- Feeling constantly anxious or on edge
- Being easily startled by noises or unexpected events
- Difficulty relaxing or "switching off"
- Muscle tension or jaw clenching
- A racing heart or shallow breathing
- Difficulty sleeping
- Feeling restless or irritable
- Always looking for what could go wrong.
Some people describe it as living with an internal alarm system that's always turned up too high.
Why Does This Happen After a Difficult Experience?
The nervous system learns through experience.
If you've experienced something frightening, overwhelming or unpredictable, your brain may begin to prioritise detecting similar threats in the future.
Sometimes those reminders are obvious: a place or person connected to the experience.
Sometimes they're subtle:
A smell.
A particular tone of voice.
Feeling trapped.
Physical pain.
A crowded environment.
A certain time of year.
These are often called triggers. A trigger isn't a sign you're "back at the event", it's a cue that your nervous system has associated with danger.
A helpful model of PTSD suggests that distress can persist when the brain continues to experience a powerful sense of current threat, influenced by memories, meanings attached to the event and coping strategies (Ehlers & Clark, 2000).
Your Body Remembers, Even When Your Mind Knows You're Safe
One of the most confusing parts of trauma can be knowing logically that you're safe while your body feels anything but.
You might think:
"Nothing bad is happening right now… so why do I feel like this?"
This happens because the body's protective systems often respond before conscious reasoning has had time to evaluate the situation.
Research into trauma neurobiology has shown that trauma can alter how the brain processes threat, emotion and bodily responses, making some people more sensitive to reminders of danger (Frewen & Lanius, 2006).
Understanding this can reduce self-blame.
Your body isn't "overreacting" on purpose, it may be trying to keep you safe.
High Alert Doesn't Always Look Like Anxiety
Many people assume high alert always looks like panic or worry.
Sometimes it does.
But sometimes it looks like:
- Feeling emotionally numb
- Shutting down
- Feeling disconnected from yourself
- Becoming exhausted after periods of stress
- Avoiding situations that feel overwhelming.
The nervous system doesn't only respond by becoming more activated, it can also move towards shutdown when things feel too much.
This is why understanding the Window of Tolerance can be so helpful. We all move in and out of a zone where we can think, feel and respond flexibly, and difficult experiences can make that window feel narrower.
Why “Just Relax” Rarely Works
If someone tells you to relax while your nervous system is activated, it can feel frustrating.
That's because regulation isn't simply a decision.
When the body perceives danger, it mobilises automatically.
Instead of forcing relaxation, it can be more helpful to focus on regulation, helping your nervous system recognise cues of safety and reconnect with the present.
Gentle Ways to Help Your Body Feel Safer
There isn't one technique that works for everyone, but many people find these approaches helpful:
Grounding
Use your senses to reconnect with the present moment: for example, the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise.
Connect with your body
Notice your feet on the floor, the support of the chair beneath you, or gently stretch and move.
Slow the pace
Rather than forcing deep breaths, allow your breathing to gradually become slower if that feels comfortable.
Seek connection
Feeling safe with another person can help regulate the nervous system. Humans are wired for co-regulation as well as self-regulation.
These strategies aren't about making difficult feelings disappear, they're about creating enough space to respond differently.
What Does This Mean in Sport?
Athletes often become highly skilled at pushing through discomfort.
But sometimes an injury, frightening incident, concussion or difficult life experience can leave the body feeling constantly alert.
This might show up as:
- Fear of returning to play
- Increased nerves before competition
- Difficulty trusting your body
- Feeling emotionally overwhelmed after mistakes
Performance and wellbeing aren't separate. Understanding what's happening in your nervous system can support both recovery and performance.
Healing is About Helping Your Body Learn Safety Again
Recovery doesn't mean forgetting what happened.
It means helping your mind and body learn that the present is different from the past.
This often involves understanding your triggers, developing regulation skills and building experiences of safety over time.
Research suggests that trauma recovery is supported by approaches that help people regulate distress alongside processing traumatic experiences when appropriate (NICE, 2018).
Healing isn't about "switching off" your alarm system forever.
It's about helping it recognise when it no longer needs to sound.
